A typical small bedroom gaming room involving a PC, a desk, a gaming chair, and other gaming equipment requires a certain amount of dedicated gaming space for a better experience.
But it doesn’t have to be limited to a spare bedroom.
It could be anywhere you have available space, like a basement, a living room or den, or even a nook or closet.
How much space would that be? What is a good size for a gaming room? How much space does your gaming rig need?
A standard-sized gaming room should have enough space for all the gaming equipment and enough room to create a comfortable gaming environment.
A good size for a gaming room for a single person is typically 10 x 10, or 100 square feet, which is the average size of a bedroom. This is enough space to accommodate a gaming desk, chair, and other peripherals along with other items in the room comfortably. If you’re looking for more room, around 12-15 feet (length) by 12-15 feet (width) in dimensions is a good target but still within “large bedroom” sized rooms. If you are looking to create an addition, or remodel your current space, sun rooms and basements can serve as great gaming rooms and those sizes can be anywhere from 10 x 20 feet, or larger.
A lot of empty space will be left if it’s too big.
If it’s too small, the room will feel too confined and congested.
You’ll need a room that can accommodate your gaming monitors, soundproof installation, consoles, desk, and gaming chair.
And let’s not forget shelving and space for our memorabilia and collectibles!
Having enough room for friends who want to play video games with you is important to consider before setting up a game room.
In addition, the size of the gaming screen you’ll be using will impact the gaming space too.
If you have a large gaming TV, you can play video games at a greater viewing distance, hence requiring more space. This is especially important for console gaming.
If you’re a PC gamer, your gaming monitor will be quite close to you and doesn’t require much space.
There are many factors that go into determining the size of a gaming room. Some of these include:
- Number of players
- Type of games played
- Age range of players
- Space needed for each player
- Number of monitors and TV displays
- Number of controllers
And that naturally brings up more questions like:
- How to choose the perfect size for setting up a gaming room in your home?
- What’s the average gaming room size?
- What should be the size of a gaming desk?
- How much space will my gaming chair occupy?
- What are the standard sizes of gaming room equipment?
I’ll cover everything from the type of games you play to the size of the room itself.
We’ll also cover the pros and cons of each option, as well as provide tips for choosing the perfect size for setting up a gaming room in your home.

Average Gaming Room Size
Here are some ideas for the size of room you might want to consider for your gaming room idea.
Single Person | 10×10 feet |
Couple Gaming Setup | 10×10 feet |
Multiplatform Gaming (Separate PC & Console Setups) | 12×12 feet |
Gaming Room To Play With Friends | 10×20 feet |
How To Choose The Perfect Size For Setting Up A Gaming Room In Your Home?
A PC gaming room requires less space than other gaming or recreational rooms with pool tables, foosball tables, other arcade games, etc.
Thus, for a video gamer who uses a PC or a gaming console and TV, it’s much easier to set up a gaming room in the house. If you are lucky enough to have an empty spare bedroom, or some space available in your basement, you’re in good shape and have all you need to get started setting up that awesome gaming room idea you’ve been thinking about.
Here are a few questions you should keep in mind when choosing the perfect size for setting up a gaming room in your home:
- How many gaming setups would be there? Is it just you, or does your partner also wants to use the same room for their gaming setup?
- Do you want a separate console setup to play with friends? You might need to add a couch for that.
- Do you have space for floating shelves? If not, you’d want to make space for a display cabinet.
- How many monitors are you planning to use? What’s their size?
- The number of players? And their age group?
Any room size equal to or above 100 square feet would suffice. Most gamers often set up their gaming rooms in spare bedrooms, in their own bedrooms, or in their house’s basement. Basements have more than enough space to have a comfortable gaming experience.
If you don’t have a separate room available, don’t worry, you can always find enough space in another room like your living room. You just need 12.5 to 13.5 square feet for the desk and 9 feet for the chair.
While bedroom setups are more compatible for a single player, living room gaming setups can accommodate more players and space.
The problem with shared space is that it lacks privacy. Moreover, if you’re setting up in a common living area like your living room, you might not be able to set up the space like you would if you had a dedicated gaming room. If you’re setting up in your living room it might not be possible to set up some of the cool gaming room ideas you want like LED lighting and other gaming room decor, etc.
What are the Standard Sizes For Gaming Room Equipment?
A typical gaming accessory list for a casual gamer includes a desk, chair, speakers, consoles, PC/TV, keyboard, mouse, etc.
To get an optimal gaming room size, you must consider their respective sizes before setting up the gaming room decor.
A basic gaming setup only requires a desk and a chair.
If you are a more advanced gamer, you might want to add a refrigerator for hydration and nutrition (yes, I’m talking about G-Fuel) purposes during long hours of continuous gaming.
Similarly, a display cabinet is needed if you want to display your memorabilia and other cool stuff like vintage consoles, and DVDs.
The table below describes the space required for different gaming equipment separately. Thus, you can clearly understand your gaming room’s optimal size.
Gaming Equipment | Space required |
Desk | 12.5 to 13.5 square feet |
Gaming Chair | 9 square feet |
Shelves and Display Cases | 25” x 7.25”
(Floating shelves do not take up any floor space) |
Small Refrigerator | 7 to 17 cubic feet |
Floor Couch/Bean Bag | 22 to 35 square feet |
What Should Be The Size Of A Gaming Desk?
Optimally, a gaming desk that is 60 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 30 inches high will have enough space for you to place all your gadgets. The desk will take up around 12.5 square feet of your floor space.
The shape of the desk will also affect your size requirement.
A rectangular desk is the simplest and the most common one to go with. However, other options like an L-shaped desk or a curved or a straight desk can also be a great fit. They generally provide more space and are preferred by experts.
The GreenForest L Shaped Gaming Desk will take up 13.5 square feet and 18 square feet if we include the space in the middle.
Does The Number & Size Of Gaming Monitors/TVs Affect The Size Of The Desk?
Yes, the number and size of monitors and displays you use with your gaming rig will make a difference on what size of desk you need to best accommodate your gear.
If you’re going for a multiple monitor setup, you need more horizontal space on your desk.
For example, the MOTPK Ergonomic Gaming Desk only offers 39 inches in width. This makes it suitable for only one monitor.
On the contrary, the Sleepmax Gaming Desk is 63” wide, making it suitable for multiple monitors.
Note that the wider the desk, the more space it’ll take up in the room.
The same goes for the size of monitors/TVs.
An ultrawide monitor is typically around 34-49 inches, so you need a bigger desk for it.
How Much Space Will My Gaming Chair Occupy?
Several reputable brands have three ready-made sizes, small (for 5’7’’ or under), medium (for 5’8’’), or large (for 6’1’’ and up). However, tailor-made chairs are also available so you get the one that suits your body the most.
Typically, a gaming chair is 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep. That’s 4 square feet for the chair itself.
You need space to move around and rotate your gaming chair.
Moreover, recliners used for laidback console gaming often take twice as much space as gaming chairs themselves.
Hence, you should leave about 9 square feet of space for a typical gaming chair in your room.
How Much Space Do Storage Towers Require?
If you are a video game figures and collectibles enthusiast, you’d want all your stuff in the gaming room.
You have two ways to organize your action figures:
- Floating shelves
- Vertical media cabinets/towers
Floating shelves don’t take up floor space. You just need an empty wall, and you’re good to go.
On the contrary, if you have lots of collectibles and you want a dedicated place to flaunt them, you need a display cabinet.
An average display cabinet with 6 shelves will require 2.1 square feet of floor space.
If you want to store your DVDs and old gaming consoles (Yes, I still have my old Watari), you can go for the Atlantic Oskar Adjustable Media Cabinet. It’s 7.125” long and 37.25” wide.
Can A Gaming Couch Fit In A 10×10 Room?
If you are setting up a gaming room to play multiplayer games with your friends, a gaming couch is a must.
Online gaming has taken over the vintage in-person split-screen multiplayer experience.
But games like WWE, Tekken, and Street Fighter still compel you to invite your friends over for a gaming night.
A typical floor couch is 71” deep and 45” long. That’s about 22 square feet of floor space.
Similarly, you need around 35 square feet for a full-sized foam-filled bean bag.
So, both options will take considerable space in your gaming room.
If your 10×10 room only has a desk and a chair, throwing in a full-sized gaming couch in a 10×10 room won’t be an issue.
But if you have display cabinets, a refrigerator, and separate TV & console setups, adding a gaming couch will make the room crowded.
It’s important to leave enough empty space in a gaming room for you to move around comfortably.
How Much Empty Space Should You Leave In A Gaming Room?
The empty space in the room gives you a feeling of comfort and ease to move around and chill.
For any gaming room, empty space should comprise more than 25-35% of the total space to manage and create different personalized setups.
